Many of us are keen to get out and about in the UK’s wonderful certified forests whenever the opportunity arises. All of the National Trust woodlands, the Crown Estate and those run by the devolved forestry agencies – Forestry England, Forestry & Land Scotland, Natural Resources Wales and the Forest Service of Northern Ireland are all PEFC certified, along with many privately owned forests.
We therefore thought this would be a great time to launch a photography competition to showcase all aspects of the UK’s certified forests. So next time you are in the forest – be it for work or leisure – we encourage you to take your camera along.
The criteria which make up PEFC’s global forest management standard are firmly rooted in the core pillars of sustainability, economic, environmental and social. We are therefore looking for images which capture how these aspects are represented in our forests. It could be pictures of the animals and plants which call the forest home or people enjoying the forest for recreation, whether for a leisurely weekend walk with the family or a strenuous mountain bike trek. But we also recognise that forests are important to the rural economy, so we’d like to see pictures of people at work - planting, thinning, harvesting or any of the myriad of other activities which contribute to a well-managed forest. We are keen to see the many benefits that our forests convey captured in images we can use to illustrate our work.

PEFC, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, is the world’s leading forest certification system. We were founded in 1999 by small- and family forest owners to demonstrate excellence in sustainable forest management.
Now, there are more than 300 million hectares of forests are certified to our internationally recognized Sustainability Benchmarks. Certification ensures that forests are managed responsibly, and enables all of us to make responsible choices when buying wood- and forest-based products.
In fact, you might already have seen us – next time you are in the supermarket, shopping for furniture or reading a magazine, check if you can see our PEFC logo! Thanks to this logo, you know that it comes from a sustainably managed forest that will be around for generations to come.
